Christian Parenti is an author and journalist, a contributing editor at The Nation, and he has reported extensively from the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. His most recently published book is The Freedom: Shadows and Hallucinations in Occupied Iraq (2004). His two previous books are The Soft Cage: Surveillance in America from Slavery to the War on Terror, (2003) and Lockdown America: Police and Prisons in the Age of Crisis, (1999).

Based on years of travel, research and frontline reporting, Christian Parenti is available to lecture on the following topics:

Afghanistan: the use and the abuse of a buffer state.
Afghanistan was the path into Iraq and it will be the path out. The war is based on myths of its just nature and win-ability. This lecture gives a deep analysis of Afghanistan's crisis from its root in the 19th century, to the logic of Obama's promised escalation.

Climate War Now: Climate change is accelerating state collapse and warfare all across the global south. This talk offers an environmental analysis of how and why states collapse.

Criminal Justice: The Long Backlash.
Based on the new edition of Parenti’s classic book “Lockdown America,” this lecture gives a political-economic analysis of the US criminal justice crackdown from the late sixties, to the war on drugs, to the present war on terror.

Surveillance: Building Obedience.
Based on “The Soft Cage,” this lecture is a discussion of the politics and development of routine, everyday surveillance. The talk explores the technology of social control, from ante-bellum chattel slavery to Facebook.

He has appeared as a commentator on the Lerhrer News Hour; Bill Moyers Journal; Now with David Brancaccio; The World Tonight, BBC; Democracy Now; Fox News; Weekend Edition, and numerous other NPR programs.

Parenti received a PhD in Sociology from the London School of Economics in 2000 and has been a Senior Criminal Justice fellow of the Soros Foundation’s Open Society Institute, and a Ford Foundation fellow at the City University of New York Graduate Center. He has won numerous reporting awards.
