Believe it or not, Rob Del Bueno has not always been a vegetable oil baron. While studying Industrial Design at Auburn University in Auburn Alabama, he was a founding member of the intergalactic instrumental indie-rock band Man or Astro-man. He spent over 10 years gallivanting around the globe performing with his head on fire, theremin in hand, and tesla coil by his side. But alas, as all projectiles have their trajectories, the path of the band was approaching its apex, and a new direction needed to be established before the astro-audio project came crashing into a smoldering crater.
Rob started Zero Return Studios in Atlanta, GA and started spending more time in the studio than in the tour van (er..I mean ship). One day, a band arrived from California to record an album at Zero Return, and it came to light during the session that the band ran their tour van not on gasoline, but on waste fryer oils. Instead of going to the gas station, they simply pumped the waste french fry grease from the dive bars they performed in, and drove on! The implications of this were not lost on Rob, and eventually he became a bit obsessed. Already active environmentally, and concerned about issues of finite fossil fuel supplies, he quickly sold his gas burning cars, and bought a 1974 Mercedes Benz 240. He soon converted it to run on fryer oil, and also began making biodiesel. Word started to spread, and the next thing he knew, he was converting cars, and selling biodiesel for many folks in the Atlanta area.
To date, Rob has converted well over 100 vehicles to run on vegetable oil, and has made thousands of gallons of biodiesel. Currently Rob works for the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, managing a small-scale, distributed biodiesel production project and while Rob feels biodiesel may be a better route for the mainstream, he still runs his vehicles on straight veg, and he continues to enjoy informing others how to do so. So yeah... he’s still obsessed.
